karakum: summer skincare essentials

HAPPY FRIDAY, ALL. Today's post is inspired by the Karakum Desert for its sun-scorching heat, wind-swept lines across the sand dunes, & rich, warm tones. Summertime in California is super dry and the sun feels 10x closer than usual--probably due to the lack of dense clouds in the sky. And so, I want to share a few skincare essentials to keep my skin in check when I feel like a grease ball 24/7.

Complex Beauty Afterglow Complexion Mist, Herbivore Botanicals Rose Hibiscus Hydrating Face Mist, Woven Joggers from Forever 21, Bandeau from Gaya

I can't survive without face mists in the summertime. Mists are just such a relaxing & soothing way to refresh your makeup and eliminate redness. I have oily skin, so typically after a few hours in the sun, I feel pretty gross or sweaty. I've been building up quite the collection of sprays in the past few months, but out of all the ones I own, these two are the ones I reach for the most. I especially love the Complex Beauty mist because it contains glycolic acid & other nourishing organic ingredients. Light exfoliation is so necessary during warm weather seasons to prevent that buildup of pollution & sebum in the pores. I use this one as a toner morning & night and as a mist throughout the day. However, be sure to wear sunscreen since the glycolic acid can make skin more sensitive to sunlight.

The Herbivore Botanicals Rose Hibiscus Hydrating Face Mist is a savior when my skin feels irritated. When it's hot, I try to avoid heavier moisturizers because they don't absorb as well. This hydrating mist is a must-have product to keep my skin hydrated without the "disco ball" effect. I also use this when my skin feels super flushed after a full day in the sun.

Akar Skin Desert Rescue Face Oil, Caudalie Vinoperfect Brightening Essence, Craft Spells Nausea (album)

No one really talks about this skin issue that oily skin types have. There's a common misconception that dry skin is not an issue for people with oily skin. However, it's super common to have dehydrated dry skin, while still suffering from excess oil production. I never could really grasp the fact that I had oily skin yet every time I wore foundation, the pigments clung to my dry patches. I decided to give face oils a shot to help with the dehydrated skin & it has done wonders. This face oil from Akar Skin is one of the best face oils I have ever use. It's lightweight, absorbs in a pinch, & makes my skin feel super soft.

The Caudalie essence is simple amazing. It's super effective, yet gentle. It also contains a light amount of glycolic acid for brightening the skin. The best thing about this essence is that it feels like a drink of water for dehydrated or dried-out skin & has a nice cooling effect. The texture is super thin as well, making it super light for summer. This Caudalie essence is also fairly affordable at $42 compared to other essences out on the market.

Glossier Super Pure Serum & Priming Moisturizer

The last of my summer skincare essentials are two products from Glossier. Glossier is one of my favorite beauty brands because it creates simple products that work well for many skin types. The Super Pure serum has been great for keeping my breakouts at bay. I used to think that salicylic acid & benzoyl peroxide were the only acne treatments out there and neither worked for my skin. This serum is formulated with niacinamide & zinc as the star ingredients. The formulation is the best I've found for helping me keep my acne flare-ups under control. Plus, it doesn't dry out my skin!

The Priming Moisturizer is a Glossier product I've talked about in the past. Since it absorbs so easily into the skin & leaves a semi-matte, well-hydrated finish, this moisturizer has quickly climbed its way into my summertime skincare staples. It also doesn't clog my pores, so I'm really happy with that.

What are your summertime skincare staples?

Until next time, Megan.
